Pizza Farm – A Midwestern Tradition

Minneapolis is a city I constantly hear my coastal friends rave about — the people are nice, the food is great and the farmers markets are world class. I went out there to see for myself, and had the pleasure of tagging along with a group of creative pizza-loving ladies: artist Isa Gagarin,  jewelry designers Erin Smith and Anika Kaplan, graphic designer Maddy Nye, and artist/inter designer Sarah Burns. I had heard about an event called Pizza Farm, a network of local farms from MN to WI who open their grounds and their pizza ovens to the public once a week in the summer, but , pizza is best when shared. At the very mention of the idea, Annika and Erin rallied a crew, prepared some salads and we headed out.

The beauty of the event is that all ingredients that go into the pizza come from the hosting farm itself. The preferred Pizza Farm for my crew happened is was the first of 6 Pizza Farms and is located in Wisconsin, 2 hours away down winding rural paths, and finally up a dirt road with no signage whatsoever. This was a Tuesday evening at 5pm, and A to Z Farm was packed with picnicers arriving with blankets, wine and in our case, a host of additional salads, to compliment the wood fired pizza. And best of all, the toppings are adventurous; my absolute favorite and total revelations – sauerkraut pizza.
