Fuck Brunch x Pichon – Mexico City

I popped down to Mexico City for a couple of days this past week and had the pleasure of joining my friends at their regular pop-up, Pichon, to serve a savory brunch to friends and hungry locals. Niki Nakazawa and I had collaborated on the first in my series, #FuckBrunch, in Brooklyn this past summer, and this would be the 2nd edition. Hugo Duran, Niki’s genius partner in all things Pichon, wanted to get experimental — his idea was to serve frogs. Not frog legs, but the entire frog presented in its own habitat — aka, salad. For those who preferred to play it safe on a Sunday afternoon, we had an option of rabbit sausage bowls, with farro, an oil-based salsa, amaranth sprouts, Korean pickles, pickled cauliflower…well, there was too much to list but trust me, it was good.

We headed to Mercado 100 in the Roma neighborhood, where we could find the best organic produce in the city (and some divine street food as well). The movement towards organic, non-GMO food is growing here, and this weekly market is a prime example of the care and intention being paid to the way Mexicans eat, and how they honor their own cuisine and culture. Farmers were selling everything — beans, corn, chocolate and the mezcal, and with each stand came an introduction to the maker. We gathered materials and headed to Muebles Sullivan, a corner spot open on both sides, an ideal venue for our event.

Thank you Hugo and Niki for including me on this adventure. I can now say, frog does indeed, taste just like chicken.
